Fire alarm and detection systems

The protection of life and property is the main function of any fire alarm or detection system in any commercial building or premises. A typical system will incorporate four key components.

  1. AFDs (automatic fire detectors), that, as their name suggests, will detect smoke or excess heat.
  2. A clearly audible bell or siren.
  3. Break glass or manual call points should ideally be placed adjacent to exits, with at least one on each floor of the building.
  4. And finally, an installed indicator and control panel.

AFDs can also be connected to activate in conjunction with other fire safety systems in the office or other type of facility. These can be, for example, smoke control vents and/or door closing sensors.

Fire safety considerations

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) maintains that most fires are preventable. In it’s guidance Introduction to fire safety, it states

“Those responsible for workplaces and other buildings to which the public have access can avoid them by taking responsibility for and adopting the right behaviours and procedures.”

As part of an annual fire safety risk assessment, should be a consideration of how people can be protected should a fire break out.

“Consider how to detect fires and how to warn people quickly if they start, for example, installing smoke alarms and fire alarms or bells.”
